In our latest regional market report, we take a comprehensive look at the economic trajectory of Central Oregon. Coupled with their experience working in the market, our local team unpacked economic data to take a candid look at the opportunities and challenges facing the Bend-Redmond metro area and surrounding counties.
Key highlights.
1. Steady labor force and public sector job growth.
While most job growth over the past year came from public-sector-related industries like education, healthcare, and government, Bend-Redmond's private sector remains strong. Sectors like trade, leisure and hospitality, and business services still employ more people overall.

2. Private establishment growth.
The number of private businesses in the three-county region grew an astounding 73 percent from 2014 to 2024. Although there was a slight dip in 2024, likely due to economic tightening, the trend remains overwhelmingly positive.

3. Rising incomes and growing labor force.
Deschutes County experienced a 93 percent increase in median household income from 2013 to 2023, while Crook County rose by 69 percent and Jefferson County 66 percent. The region continues to attract working-age newcomers with each county seeing its labor force grow nearly every year over the last decade.

4. Population growth balanced by housing challenges.
Central Oregon’s population has steadily grown since 2013, with a 1.7 percent annual growth rate since 2019. However, this expansion puts pressure on housing supply. Rental rates in Bend-Redmond now exceed those in Eugene by 17 percent, Medford by 22 percent, and Salem by 34 percent.

Looking ahead.
Despite challenges — particularly in housing and sectoral job balance — the outlook for Central Oregon remains optimistic. With a growing labor force, entrepreneurial momentum, and expanding industries, the region is poised to remain a destination for investment, innovation, and community building.
